You’ve been wondering for a while what to do about your parents or relatives who are elderly. They live alone and won’t give up their independence and you wouldn’t want them to, but their healthcare provider comes twice a week, sometimes more often, and from time to time has had trouble getting in because the occupants are in bed or ill. You don’t want to even consider a nursing home or a fulltime care facility, but you can’t think of what to do.

Secret Digital Key Safe for the Elderly

One small suggestion that might help in the short-term is if the care providers had access to the house for emergencies or for when the elderly can’t come to the door. A small key safe box with a code that only the healthcare workers have access to may be just the thing to allow independent living with a little extra peace of mind for them, for you and for their care providers. A digital key safe is not expensive and can hold a couple keys to a home in a small secure box that can be attached to any outdoor area or wall or secured to a hidden location. These small combination key safe models will not be accessible to thieves or other people because the code is set by YOU or the home owner and is almost impossible to break or open without the code. This kind of key storage may aid the elderly or disabled to receive the timely care they need and also offer a means for entry in case of an emergency.

Keysafe Recommended by Healthcare Professionals

Many healthcare providers are recommending that their clients have key boxes fixed on their premises and that the secret code be held only by the staff or family members who need access to the home. This type of key security is useful because the code can even be used by paramedics who may only have a few minutes to aid a patient before it’s too late. Some recommend that when the emergency calls are placed, the key safe code be given to the emergency personnel so that entry into the home by force will not be required.

Quick Emergency Access with the help of a Key Safe

Key safe boxes are not just for keeping out unwanted strangers, but also for allowing access to those helpful professionals who save lives. There are many case histories that show that heart attack victims who have given the key safe code over the phone to the emergency staff were saved only because the paramedics were able to enter and revive the victims quickly. The few minutes that may have been wasted searching for a means of entry into a home may have cost a life.

Don’t wait until it’s too late, secure your keys and provide access to those who can aid the elderly or disabled with a digital key safe or a key storage system that will enable assistance without hindering independence.

It is not advisable to leave your possessions in the hands of unknown neighbors or secreted poorly in cracks and corners or ledges or under objects that most people know may contain the keys to your home. A mailbox is especially terrible, and under a mat is the very worst.

Bad Key Storage Places

My neighbor keeps his spare keys under a dusty pot in the open garage and a few times it’s gone missing. Where is the key? Who knows. But he keeps putting keys under the same dusty pot and by now everyone in the area knows. He might as well not lock his door.

That’s the thing, a lock is only as good as the inability to open it. If there’s a key beside a lock the lock is of no use. Some elderly people I know keep every door locked day and night but there’s a set of keys hanging right beside the front door for the grandchildren to come in. I always laugh because the work just as well for anyone not just the grandchildren. However, in the name of pseudo peace of mind and security many people do very strange things that do not offer them one ounce of security and does not ensure their home or their possessions or their lives are a bit safer. Key safe boxes and key safe storage cabinets that have digital codes do offer a reasonable alterative to stashing keys under mats or hanging them on rusty nails.

The Padlock that Disguises a Safe

One such option is a unique key box that appears to be a padlock. The box actually contains enough space for keys and valuables and has a code. This key safe is called a Frostfire Mooncode Key Safe and is made of stainless steel. It is also weather resistant and can be hung or attached to anything, anywhere indoors or out.

It can be a car key safe or a door key safe, even can be left on the door knob or knocker because the box doesn’t look like anything might be inside. It’s also a good style for carrying your credit cards or a little money when a pouch or a wallet may be too obvious. Who want s to steal a padlock. It also can be great for taking on outings, for storing your valuables when at a swimming pool or while skiing or when you travel abroad, or when you go scuba diving in Bali or Belize or when you’re surfing in Hawaii.

Small, Light, Portable and Strong

Here’s why the Frostfire Mooncode Key Safe is great. It’s small 80mm x 80mm x 31mm and only weighs 600g. It has a shackle which is made of steel and the case and the dials are all made of Zinc alloy, so it’s strong.

Christmas Gifts for the Forgetful

Many people are buying them and using them on their own and others are receiving them as ingenious Christmas gifts. Especially for a parent or child who may frequently misplace their keys, this little device can be a very appreciated gift instead of socks and a tie. Since Christmas is a few months away you have lots of time to add a few of these little gadgets to your shopping list. They’re easy to buy online and cost just under $20.

key locking

Cabinet Size and Key Storage Capacity

You can choose a key safe for 1 key or a master key vault for over 1000 keys. Keys can be stored individually or in groups.

You can read product descriptions and research every kind of security device on the market today but the best way to know if a key safe will be right for your needs is to listen to what real people have to say about them and how they are used.

If you are a person who lives in an apartment or a house and are tired of searching for a hiding place for your spare key, or if you are a small business who must entrust keys to employees, or if you manage a large enterprise and are looking for managed or secured master key cabinets or boxes, then the following information will be of interest to you.

You will read what law enforcement officials have to say about a car key safe, about how car rental services use key boxes to secure hundreds, or even thousands, of keys for their clients, how night operators and other private health care professionals have used an electronic or digital key safe to provide security for themselves, their guests or clients.

There are also comments from property owners and property management companies who have recently added key boxes or a digital key safe system to the homes or buildings they manage, or to tenant shelters or community projects they administer.

Law Enforcement and car key safes

A Chief Inspector of a stolen vehicle unit says that he uses a car key safe in his vehicle and has had them distributed to the officers under his care. He has commented on the fact that the police fleets use a large master key safe, in a key cabinet or key boxes, to maintain copies of police car keys. He says that law enforcement puts their trust in key safes to set an example for the public.

Security for law enforcement officers is their top priority and therefore a combination key safe or an electronic key safe is secreted in each police unit. In the UK, as in other countries, many law enforcement organizations have formed alliances with the leading key safe companies who have developed products specific to the police forces’ needs, but the technology used to design police products are passed on to individuals.

Car Rental Agencies and Master Key Safe Management

A representative of a leading international car rental agency says that managing keys is their main security issue, especially while supplying out-of-hours rentals to their major contracted clients. They have come to depend upon a Supra key safe system which allows renters to access cars 24 hours a day at airports across the UK.

They say that keeping keys safe is the most important business management solution they have had to develop, and while it has been challenging, they have partnered with a variety of electronic and digital key safe companies to ensure their master key safe system is state of the art.

Car rental agency key safes are unique because they must allow access to authorized employees and regular clients while securing vehicle keys from potential theft, misplacement or loss. They must maintain copies of the keys to all the vehicles in their fleets should a client lock the keys in the vehicle or lose the keys they have been give. Therefore the keys in the combination key safe or digital key safe in their offices must be accessible to employees 24 hours a day, in an organized manner, which will allow customer service attendants to assist clients in the event of an emergency.

The type of Key Safe you choose mostly depends on what purpose your spare keys will serve. Here are some of the types of safes available based on the categories of people’s key safe needs:

Emergency Service Key Access

Key safes are widely used for emergency service access for medical professionals who rely on key holders being available to allow access to patients’ homes who require critical care without the need of forced entry. Without a key safe such emergency services may hinder entry into a home or apartment and risk losing a patient or delaying the patient’s chances of recovery. Key safes open doors and save lives for the elderly or handicapped patients who provide the access codes to their keysafe or key boxes, which are installed in a secret outdoor place, only for health care providers.

These emergency key safes come in many styles depending on the number of keys needed to be stored and where the key boxes will be installed so as to be hidden from view. Some prefer the combination key safe over an electronic key safe because they don’t depend on electricity. Others prefer a digital key safe because it’s quick and easy to key in a security code.

Key Safe for Family and Friends

For key storage, of either spare keys or emergency keys, a total key storage solution allows your keys to be stored in a vault without having to copy multiple key sets to give to regular visitors. The keys remain safe in the vault and the access code is only given to those whom you authorize.

Supra key safe, available in the UK, has key safes that aid seniors and individuals maintain their independent living style. They also offer key safes and key boxes and controlled access codes for health care managers and assist police and crime reduction officers in keeping neighborhoods safe with their many key safe products.

A note of caution:

It is important that when you select a key safe company to install your key cabinet, or box, that the installation people are certified members of the master locksmiths association or a similar association in your region. Otherwise they must be CRB, which means they have passed a criminal police check, or be a member of a local security authority.

Remember that no matter how great your key safe may be, it is only as safe the people who have access to the code.

Residential Key Safe

Some residential key safe models are designed specifically for children who get home before their parents get off work. Others are specific for servicing or home maintenance while the house in unattended. The most common application for the simple portable key safe, car safe and small key boxes are for safe storage of spare keys.

The secure storage of hidden keys can be effectively managed with an electronic key safe or a digital key safe and set for emergency entry only. Key cabinets and master key safes can also have applications for vacation homes and retirement community condominiums.

Commercial Key Boxes

There are also commercial uses that require added features and services such as professionally managed alarm and emergency entry, storing and coding as to who is authorized to access certain office keys and management of key cabinets for institutions. Construction site key safes must be durable and able to hold hundreds of keys with access only allowed for authorized personnel.

There are special key safe models for healthcare professionals and property managers who may require elaborate electronic or digital safes that can safely store a multitude of client’s keys.

In this day and age more of us are looking to increase our home security. Whether that is accomplished by fitting expensive outdoor security cameras or going for a cheap option such as the key safe you are going to have to get some advice on which products on the market are the right ones for you.

A digital key safe or an electronic key safe depend on electricity to power them and so many people choose a combination key safe that is manual. That choice will up to your needs and those who will be allowed to access to the key cabinet or key boxes you secretly install.

For people who have multiple family members of friends who require keys or for those individuals who find it difficult to answer the door, any kind of key safe, be it electric, digital or manual will do the trick. All key safe products offer a similar function: that of having a safe method of allowing authorized persons to enter your property without leaving a key under the mat or in some unsecure location.

It will avoid such things as doors left on the latch or having to give a relatively unknown neighbor a key to your world. A digital key safe can also work hand in hand with community alarms services and to provide access to needed care in the event of an emergency without the use of forced entry.

How easy is it to break into a key safe?

If a key safe has been properly installed, and if the key box or key cabinet’s lid or cover has been fitted correctly, and the box itself has been mounted in a secret or hidden location, the risks of it being broken into are very small.

For an intruder who wished to unlawfully gain access to your home or property by first searching for a key box with a key to the door and then taking the time to break and/or unlock the code of the key box, this will be a very time consuming and a very unlikely procedure for such a person to follow. Most intruders, should they be determined to gain access to your home, will not take the time to search for a key unless it is very obvious.

A home break-in is exactly that, it is a person who breaks into your home, not someone who walks in with a key after hours and hours of searching and cracking a code. However for the sake of argument let’s assume an intruder finds your secret key box and decides to try to access your key. Since there are only two ways of opening the box, the opportunist must choose one of them.

Two ways to access the key:

Go through the countless possibilities of what the code may be and spend hours doing so in order to quietly get his/her hands on the key within. This is unlikely to happen.

Remove the box from where it has been installed and noisily smash or hammer the safe until it breaks. This is also unlikely due to the amount of noise this will produce.

However should someone be so stupid as to smash a key box, the noise of smashing the box or key cabinet will likely alert you or a neighbor. It is impossible to break a key box without tools or making a lot of noise. It is unlikely an intruder will use his tools to open your key box when he/she can use those tools to pick a lock or smash a window to the same effect. If you are connected to a home security alarm system you will be protected from such home invasion and the key box will not have played a roll either in favor or against the break-in.

But what about cracking the key safe code?

For those who are concerned that the code may be easy to crack on your keysafe, remember that it is a code much like all the codes you use to secure your bank accounts or other secret personal matters. It should be at least 5-6 digits long and not be something easy to guess for those who may know something about you. Birthdays are always a bad choice.

To stumble across a code by entering multiple number choices into a key safe will be so time consuming it is very doubtful to occur. The odds of unlocking a 6 digit code by entering random numbers are astronomical and not worth the time it would take so using such a device as part of your home security equipment is a very wise move.

police and government institutions where accessing homes or cars need not require force or damaging property

real-estate agents and property managers who have been entrusted with the safe keeping of clients property keys

car rental agencies who must safely store hundreds of keys but permit key access to employees

private individuals who frequently misplace their home or car keys and require a safe key storage location or a portable key safe to avoid frequently calling a locksmith

landlords of apartment buildings who must keep duplicate copies of tenants keys in a master key safe should a tenant be locked out or lose their key

hotel owners and administrators who must keep their guest keys, and duplicate or triplicate copies of room keys, allowing access only to those who are authorized for maintenance, room cleaning or emergency guest services
